From start-ups to big-brand businesses looking to grow, it really does happen to the best of us! <\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #00b5ce;\"><b>What\u2019s going on? <\/b><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In my experience, although most founders and marketers accept the wisdom of targeting their marketing to a well-defined customer, they\u2019re not doing it for one of three reasons:<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><b><span style=\"color: #00b5ce;\">Paddling furiously:<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> We start our businesses with a plan. But a year, two, ten in, we\u2019re often still paddling furiously to get new business in. We lose our way, or perhaps we never defined it in the first place\u00a0<\/span><\/b><\/li>\n<li><strong><span style=\"color: #00b5ce;\">Fear of missing out:<\/span><\/strong> Fear is a common and understandable barrier for small businesses. We worry about putting any potential customers off buying from us so we try to keep ourselves open to everyone<\/li>\n<li><b><span style=\"color: #00b5ce;\">Lack of agreement:<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Management teams can be surprisingly varied in who they think the customer is or should be. This can make for mixed messages that will erode trust in our businesses<\/span><\/b><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When we don\u2019t target effectively, our messaging is so generic that it doesn\u2019t resonate and convert.
