SUMMARY:Points are good because they stick into things
DESCRIPTION:Join CIM for another great webinar in the Graduate Gateway Marketing Club on Thursday 25 February 2021.\nEvery brand needs a point\, a sharp definition of its purpose that will stick in people’s minds. It stands to reason that a brand-aligned behind a shared point will have a better chance of success than one that isn’t. However\, this means making a choice about what that one point is\, and that can be can fiendishly hard to do. A brand strategy can do this. \nThis session will introduce what a brand strategy is (and what it isn’t)\, how it delivers financial value to an organisation\, the key elements that make up a brand strategy\, the role it plays in shaping the brand\, the need to engage the whole organisation in its development and how it can fit into the broader marketing and planning process. \nBased on the Brand Arrow®\, a planning tool covered in Bruce M Mckinnon’s award-winning book ‘What’s Your Point?’\, it will cover the four of the core building blocks of any brand strategy: \n\nVision – defining where the brand wants to head to and the barriers and drivers to reaching it\nPositioning – describing what is at the heart of the brand\, what makes it unique in the market\nProposition – capturing that positioning in a way that engages firstly your team and secondly your customers\nValues – defining the character of the brand to act as a benchmark for both the team and the brand’s customers\n\nBruce will also explore the tangible deliverables a brand strategy can provide including: \n\nElevator pitch – a sentence that defines the problem that all its customers are facing\, and a sentence then defines how the brand will solve that problem\nKey messaging – the 5 most powerful messages that ensure the brand is using consistent and correct copy across all its communications channels\nBrand name – using the brand strategy as a tool to first ensure the brand name reflects its direction and if required the development of a new or evolved brand name\n\nAt the end of the session\, delegates will all have a good idea of how brand strategy can add both strategic and practical value to any organisation. \nSpeaker: Bruce M Mckinnon \nBruce has worked in brand marketing for 30 years and passionately believes the right brand strategy is the most effective tool a client has to deliver its point. In 2009\, he founded the specialist brand strategy practice The Brand Arrow and has since delivered over 70 assignments in Europe and North America in a variety of sectors including artificial intelligence\, legal tech\, financial services\, food and drink\, real estate\, and software. \nIn 2019 Bruce published What’s Your Point? containing the proprietary Brand Arrow framework\, winning silver at the US Business Book Awards (Axiom). \nBruce regularly speaks on the subject of brand at conferences\, business schools\, facilitates workshops\, and has been invited to speak at both CIM Marketing Club and annual CIM Tutor Conferences. He holds an MBA from Cranfield School of Management and the CIM Post Graduate Diploma in Marketing. \nBruce’s book What’s Your Point? is currently on offer in the CIM bookshop. \nThis is the second of four CIM Graduate Gateway Marketing Club online events planned for this academic year. \nWhat is the CIM Graduate Gateway Marketing Club? \nFor the past three years leading universities across the south of the UK have collaborated with the CIM to run a programme of on-campus practitioner-led events for marketing students and marketers alike. SUMMARY:The darker side of nudging
DESCRIPTION:Join CIM for another great webinar in the Webinar Express Series on Thursday 11 February 2021.\nThe darker side of nudging – when the ends don’t justify the means…\nCharity and social marketers\, behaviour change practitioners and social policy campaigners do good\, well that’s their aim. Supported by clear objectives\, detailed policies\, defined behavioural outcomes and ethical codes of conduct\, the choice of marketing techniques should be straightforward. \nBut certain tactics often used in commercial environments have triggered debate\, particularly when used in not-for-profit contexts. For example\, greater digital automation and AI algorithms (meaning the absence of human decision-making) may cause messages to be re-targeted to vulnerable or inappropriate audiences. Or the use of ‘urgency messaging’\, tapping into scarcity bias\, to manipulate an action. We may consider that our messages are just sensibly framed (copywritten) or that we’ve made good use of anchoring or defaults to encourage larger donations or more sign-ups\, but if these are primarily ‘reactive’ decisions rather than ‘reasoned’ decisions\, are we being deceptive by exploiting certain susceptibilities? When is a choice not a choice? And is transparency a pre-requisite? \nThe ethical arguments can be nuanced and the ‘ends justify the means’ argument cannot be applied in all circumstances. This session will explore the following: \n\n\n\n\nWhich tactics should we be worried about\nWhich techniques might be considered unethical and which cognitive biases are they tapping into\nExamples from the non-profit sector\, calling out the sludgers\nHow to sense check your influencing strategy and which frameworks can help\nWays we can influence and persuade with integrity\nGoing forward – how can we support one another without judgement and in our clients and supporters’ best interests\n\nOr as Good Ol’ King Wenceslas might have said…“Dear do-gooders\, please do good goodly or the good you do won’t be too good.” \nIn this presentation\, Gordon Seabright will share the lessons learned from a career centred on turnaround and transformation; what worked\, what didn’t\, and what insights are relevant to anyone guiding their organisation through a period of essential change. \nLiz Barnes\, Vice-Chair of the CIM Charity and Social Marketing Group\, Behavioural Scientist and Marketer\, will share her insights from her work in social marketing\, customer experience and the third sector where she has seen behaviour change techniques applied for good and learned from the bad. \nThe webinar is kindly hosted by the CIM Charity and Social Marketing Group and lasts approximately 40-45 minutes inclusive of a Q&A session after the presentation. \nInformation on how to join\, along with the link\, will be sent closer to the date of the webinar so please do check your spam/junk folders the morning of the webinar in case the email has been directed there by your email provider. SUMMARY:Leading through turnaround and transformation
DESCRIPTION:Join CIM for another great webinar in the Webinar Express Series on Tuesday 26 January 2021.\n\nFew places illustrate the possibility of transformation in the most unpromising of circumstances as the Eden Project. The way a post-industrial landscape in the poorest part of the UK’s poorest county was turned into an iconic destination\, educational charity and environmental inspiration shows what can be achieved working as a community and in harmony with nature. A worked out clay pit near St Austell in Cornwall is now a beacon of biodiversity and environmental optimism\, welcoming over a million visitors a year\, supporting thousands of jobs and inspiring successor projects around the world.\n\nHowever Eden’s journey was not always smooth\, and near failure in 2012-2013 brought about the need for a second transformation. The subsequent turnaround story carries lessons for organisations and brands seeking routes through difficult times\, from the three phases of recovery (financial\, reputational\, and psychological) to the need for 21st century leadership. Humility\, decency\, authenticity\, kindness and an intolerance of hierarchies were the foundations on which the turnaround was built\, along with the application of the old-fashioned virtues of focus and relentlessness. It’s the commitment to rebuilding the core proposition that\, over time\, has provided the opportunity for the brand to be extended and for new ventures to be launched. Those lessons are now being applied to a start-up\, the Creative Land Trust\, which seeks to bring about a transformation in the arts sector\, first in London and then beyond. Faced with the problem of creatives being priced out of the very city they have made vibrant and prosperous\, the Trust is developing a new model for the sector\, blending funding streams to work with the grain of the market to provide a permanent solution for the benefit of all. This combination of charity and commercialism is the basis not only of the future success of the Creative Land Trust\, but of past challenges such as the modernisation of the Royal Horticultural Society.\n\nIn this presentation\, Gordon Seabright will share the lessons learned from a career centred on turnaround and transformation; what worked\, what didn’t\, and what insights are relevant to anyone guiding their organisation through a period of essential change.\n\nSpeaker: Gordon Seabright.\nGordon has been leading cultural and environmental charities for the past decade. Since early 2020 he has been Chief Executive of the Creative Land Trust\, a new charity established to reverse the loss of artists and creatives from London. Before that he was Chief Executive of the world famous Eden Project\, following periods at the helm of the National Cycling Charity and the Royal Horticultural Society and senior posts at English Heritage\, WH Smith and Waterstones Booksellers. He also serves as a trustee/NED of a number of environmental\, international development and community organisations.\n\n\n\nThe webinar is kindly hosted by the CIM South West and lasts approximately 40-45 minutes inclusive of a Q&A session after the presentation.  \nIf you would like to register and attend the webinar please do so by clicking here. \nInformation on how to join\, along with the link\, will be sent closer to the date of the webinar so please do check your spam/junk folders the morning of the webinar in case the email has been directed there by your email provider. SUMMARY:An Introduction to Facebook for Business
DESCRIPTION:Facebook is the world’s most popular social media platform; with around 45 million people in the United Kingdom having a profile registered alone. This\, along with the incredibly powerful free tools available to us on the platform\, makes it an obvious space to look to promote your business\, grow your following\, and market your products or services.\nWhether you want to or currently use Facebook for personal reasons\, this isn’t a space that you can afford to ignore for your business in our increasingly digital world. \nIf you want to use Facebook for your business but don’t know where to start\, then this session is perfect for you. Introducing the social media platform as a business tool\, we’ll explore how you go about setting up and optimising a Business Page\, before getting you started with building your online audience and looking to create those first pieces of content. \nCourse Structure\nThis is a bite-sized 90-minute practical virtual session to help you improve your knowledge of the social media platform for your business. \nIt will cover;\nCreating a Facebook Business Page \nFollow the simple steps and learn how to create a Page for your business on the platform. Unlike personal profiles\, Pages will allow you to access and make the most of all of the free business tools available to you on Facebook; from automated messaging\, to scheduling content\, to promoting your business’s contact information to your audience. \n Optimising your new business presence \nUnderstanding the various ways that you can optimise your Page on Facebook can be the difference between converting a customer\, or helping someone find you through Facebook’s search feature. We’ll walk through the entire ‘Page Info’ section so that you know exactly what to add to your Page and how it will affect your business presence on (and off) the platform. \n Posting your first piece of content \nWe’ve all likely posted something to social media before\, but posting as a business is an entirely different kettle of fish. Looking at the first pieces of content you can create for your business Page will help you get up and running and confident in what you want to say to your audience on the platform.

SUMMARY:The UK food and drink market 2020 and beyond - where to now?
DESCRIPTION:Join CIM for another great webinar in the Webinar Express Series on Thursday 10 December 2020.\nFor all sorts of reasons\, 2020 has been one of the most eventful years in food and drink retail. The pandemic led many consumers to take their first steps into online shopping\, and retailers who were not prepared for the change struggled to keep up with massively increased demand. At the same time\, Ocado (now bigger than Tesco in terms of share value)\, severed its ties with Waitrose in favour of M&S\, whilst the discounters continued with their ambitious expansion plans and are now looking to move into the online sector. \nBut what of the future? Winners and losers\, dietary trends and how the country recovers from the pandemic may all have a part to play. Add to that Brexit and the emergence of new entrants such as Amazon Fresh\, and the challenge for retailers will be to maintain and grow market share whilst investing in online and keeping an eye on profitability. To some extent environmental issues and ‘plastic-free’ have taken back seat during the pandemic\, but will it once again emerge as one of the key differentiators in a competitive market. \nSpeaker: Andrew Walker \nAndrew is Client Knowledge Director at Kantar Worldpanel. Kantar is the global leader in continuous consumer panels. Their UK consumer panel of 30\,000 households is the largest single source of continuous consumer and shopper insights\, providing insight and information to the world’s leading brands. \nThe webinar is kindly hosted by the CIM Food\, Drink and Agriculture Group and lasts approximately 40-45 minutes inclusive of a Q&A session after the presentation. \nIf you would like to register and attend the webinar please do so by clicking here. \nInformation on how to join\, along with the link\, will be sent closer to the date of the webinar so please do check your spam/junk folders the morning of the webinar in case the email has been directed there by your email provider. \nIf you don’t receive an email containing the webinar link by 11 am on Thursday 10 December please let CIM know as soon as possible.
